About Weiss Lake, Alabama
Lake Weiss, better known locally as Weiss Lake and pronounced “Wice,” is one of Alabama’s most beloved and affordable lake destinations. Located just west of the Georgia border in Cherokee County, Weiss Lake covers approximately 30,000 acres and offers more than 400 miles of scenic shoreline, making it one of the most accessible and enjoyable waterfront communities in the Southeast.
Known as the Crappie Capital of the World, Weiss Lake attracts anglers from all over who come for world-class fishing and stay for the relaxed lake lifestyle. In addition to exceptional crappie fishing, the lake is popular for boating, kayaking, swimming, and year-round outdoor recreation.
Weiss Lake is formed by the Weiss Dam, part of the Alabama Power system. Unlike many dams, the spillway gates are located approximately four miles from the powerhouse, making it a unique feature within Alabama’s hydroelectric network. The lake maintains a summer pool level of approximately 564 feet above sea level and operates as a storage lake with seasonally varying water levels. During the summer months, water levels are typically higher to support increased power demand and peak recreational use.
Three major rivers feed Lake Weiss: the Coosa River, the Chattooga River, and the Little River. This steady water source supports excellent fishing conditions and enhances the natural beauty that defines waterfront living in Cedar Bluff, Centre, and the surrounding Weiss Lake communities.
